Definition
The adulteress Hester Prynne, in Nathaniel Hawthornes novel The Scarlet Letter , was compelled to wear such the letter 'A' stiched to her clothes. The Puritans, one of the earliest Protestant sects to settle in America, also subjected adulterers to flogging, sometimes even branding.
